The Rainbow Room is a well-known upscale restaurant and nightclub on the sixty-fifth floor of the GE Building in Rockefeller Center, Midtown Manhattan, New York City. It first opened on October 3, 1934 and was originally conceived as a formal supper club, where the elite and influential of New York could gather to socialize over tails, dine on fine cuisine, and dance to the strains of legendary big bands on a revolving floor.

In 1974, David Rockefeller oversaw a $25 million restoration and expansion of the Room’s facilities, ushering in a new era of prominence for what many architects and designers is said to be the “most perfect room in New York”. The food is northern Italian, and there are tails, wines, liqueurs, cognacs, and other drinks available.

It features a revolving dance floor, a live big band orchestra, and what is generally considered an impressive view of the city. In 1998, the Rockefeller family passed operations of the facilities of the restaurant over to the Italian Cipriani family, which had started the renowned Harry’s Bar in Venice.

Private events are hosted in several banquet rooms and for special events and holidays elaborate celebrations are organized. On New Year’s Eve, the caviar, truffles, champagne, and mixed drinks are included with the price of admission, for dinner through to breakfast at sunrise. The Rainbow Grill is a separate, somewhat less expensive restaurant with an à la carte menu on the same floor of the building, which has its own celebrations for main holidays.

Extraordinary brunch buffet are served on Sundays even for the most demanding palates. A real “must” in the New York City Luxury shopping experience.

I’m doing some advance scouting for my birthday party later this year. I’m thinking I’d like to have it in a private room somewhere, but I specifically would like one that is kind of like a "game room" - yet also suitable for serving some food (which I plan to provide). The Lafayette Lounge at the Fraunces Tavern (http://www.frauncestavern.com/index2.htm) is sort of along the lines of what I have in mind, but preferably a place with more games. Any ideas?
Oh, and the party would probably be for under 20 people.

I went to this bar recently and it sounds what you are looking for. It’s basically one big game room with a small bar. There are multiple pool, ping pong and shuffle board tables. They also have chess, checkers and scrabble boards. I saw many birthday parties there and they all brought their own food/cakes etc. Just a note that they don’t have private rooms. Also this is more of a dive bar, not a nice bar or lounge. Hope this helps!

Looking for something more fun than a cocktail party or a private room for dinner. Something like wine tasting, cooking class, etc etc.

Well, I guess it would depend on your client. Ask them for their input, and if they want you to totally make the decision, here are some ideas:

*A Movie Showing or Commercial Premiere if your client has a commercial
*Glow-Bowling
*Dancing at a club
*Walking through a park
*Photo Nite (you give everyone a camera at the party. You can do this with any theme)
*Shopping Scavenger Hunt
*Retro Nite (theme it with ’70s and ’80s stuff. Play retro music and request guests to dress vintage)

Hope that helped!

Looking for a place for my friends to gather for some drinks and music. It will be about half gay and half straight. Anyone know of any places in the city that have a private area/room in a bar or restaurant that might be good?

If you’re looking for something like that then you should try to familiarize yourself with the SOHO community. You’ll definitely find gay friendly clubs there
