When you want to buy italian cheeses, you may feel a little intimidated at first. There’s a lot to learn, right? Sure, you need to do a little bit of homework before spending any money, or you’re just blowing your pay on trial and error while trying to figure out if there are any gourmet cheeses out there that you’ll really like. So, here are a few quick tips on how to buy great Italian cheeses, and what to do with them.
Attend a Sampling Event
Don’t buy any cheeses you haven’t tried before. Look around the area, you should be able to find some sort of wine tasting event. Many liquor stores… The more upscale liquor stores, not the corner market ones, will have wine tasting events where you can try various cheeses, wines and sausages without having to spend anything more than a little bit of cash to get in.
Know Your Cheeses
Once you’ve found a cheese or two that you really enjoy, you should take a moment to look online and see what the variations are of the cheese, see who gets great reviews for making some of the best cheese of that type in the world. You don’t need to be an expert… More of a specialist. Just know everything there is to know about your favorite cheeses.
Buy What You Like
Forget all the rules about what is and isn’t good cheese. Just like with wine, if you don’t like red, you buy blush or zinfandel. You don’t buy Merlot if you hate Merlot just because that’s what Frasier Crane likes. Forget all that stuff about what is and isn’t true class or whatever. Just buy what you want, buy what tastes good. Even if you’ve tried a dozen cheeses and decided that your favorite is still Mozzarella… So what? Just buy some really good Mozzarella then. Don’t waste money, and don’t waste your time, on stuff you don’t like.
Cook With It
Don’t spend twice as much on a fancier brand of cheese just to put it on a cracker. Sure, cheese is great when you can just enjoy it with some wine, but it’s even better when you can enjoy it on a Philly cheese steak. Buy what you like and don’t think that you can’t cook with it just because it’s fancier than most cooking cheeses. It’s tricky to use a cheddar and almond loaf to make a salami sandwich, but the better the cheese, the better the food, so experiment a little and use some of your favorite cheese on some of your favorite meals.
