There are several various different varieties of restaurants. It is of interest to note that, in the past, and in countries outside of the United States and Canada, fast food establishments do not fit the conventional definition of “restaurant” that well. The term sit-down restaurant, which began as a way of differentiating fast-food restaurants from the normal variety, is non-existent as well.

The term restaurant, within these regions outside of the US, refers exclusively to the variety of eatery where you sit down at a table to dine, and are waited on by a waiter or waitress. Family-styled dining, and casual-dining as well are almost non-existent terms.

What are the separate types of restaurant dining? There’s 4 basic categories recognized officially (mostly in the US). These may include: fast-food, family style, casual dining, and fine dining. Fast-food dining entails rapid turn-around of orders. The type of restaurant known as fast casual dining falls into this category as well, but, with fast casual dining non-disposable cutlery is used. Fast-food includes street vending hot dog carts, Burger King, and more.

Family style restaurants often hold true to their name, in that they may be run by a single family. Often they’ll have a lower price on most of their menu items, and bench seats, but may offer non-disposable cutlery as well. Think small-town diner when you think of a family style restaurant.

The third category of dining known as casual dining is a type of restaurant roughly somewhere in between fast food like McDonald’s and fine dining, and probably also a step ahead of family style eating establishments. They most often are part of a popular chain, but not always. Most often they have a full bar with staff, a medium-priced menu, and serving staff to serve you. Often the bar will boast a moderate selection of beers, and a modest selection of wine.

Fine dining often has a fancier interior, more highly trained staff with an obvious and apparent dress code, and highly specific dedicated meal courses. Fine dining establishments frequently have more of “atmosphere,” and often have a required standard of dressand conduct code for their guests. Usually fine dining is restricted to just a few locations instead of being a part of a large chain, which is more commonly associated with “casual dining” establishments.

All other permutations of restaurants generally are re-formulations of fast-casual dining, and casual dining. Cafes or coffee shops are a good example of this. In most cafes, you do not have a waiter, however, your food will be brought to you. The availability of food can often be restricted to only sweets and breakfast, accompanied with idiosyncratic outdoor patio.

This variety of Italian cheese is salty to taste and is subjected to maturation after which it is normally served as an accompaniment to desserts.

The list of Italian cheeses would be incomplete with the mention of Grana Padano which is pale yellow in color and faintly reminiscent of a pineapple with regards to taste. This is one of the traditional Italian cheeses which are prepared from unpasteurized milk and it is distinguished by its thick, hard and smooth outer covering.

A Variety Of Italian Cheeses

There are many different types of Italian cheeses and most are very traditional to a specific area of the country. Cheeses that have regional designations or have label with the protected designation of origin have a specific set of rules that must be followed. In order to have a label from that region it must be made in a specific way and with products from that region.

Asiago is a very famous Italian cheese. Many times the aged versions of this cheese are confused for parmesan as they are very similar in taste and texture. The texture of Asiago will vary depending on its age. Fresh Asiago has a smooth texture and aged Asiago is very crumbly. Asiago originates from the town of Asiago outside of Venice. This cheese is used frequently with cooking and can be added to sandwiches, salads, soups, pasta and sauces.

A soft mild cheese that is quite well known is Bel Paese. This cheese was specifically designed to be a more delicate style of cheese. It is made in many parts of the world but was first produced just outside or Milan. It has a very short aging time of up to 2 months and is made primarily from cow’s milk. The name Bel Paese means Beautiful country and is taken from the name of a famous Stoppani book of the same name.

Bocconcino is a type of unripened cheese that does not have a rind. This cheese originates from Naples and at one point in time it was only made using buffalo milk. However today it is also made of cow’s milk. In order to maintain its spongy texture bocconcini is packaged in water or whey. The name means small mouthful as you can eat one piece at once.

Another type of cheese made from water buffalo milk is called burrata. This cheese has two different layers and is made of mozzarella and cream. The out layer of the cheese is firm and made of only mozzarella while the inside is much softer and is made of a mixture of mozzarella and cream. It originates from the region or Apulia and is considered an artisanal cheese. You will want to eat this cheese within a day as the flavors will begin to decrease.

A traditional Sicilian cheese made of sheep and cow milk is caciocavallo. This cheese comes with its own EU designation of origin as the cows and sheep must be feed particular food and the cheese must be made in a specific way. The flavor of caciocavallo is very similar to provolone and the cheese is generally shaped like a tear drop.

A very ancient Italian cheese is casciotta d’Urbino. There are many different forms of casciotta and this type is very old and is traditionally made of mainly sheep’s milk with about 20% cow’s milk. Casciotta d’Urbino was a favorite of Michelangelo and Pope Clement XIV. The body of this cheese has a mild flavor and is white or yellow in color and is surrounded with a yellow rind.

A semi hard cheese that has a lot of fat in it is Castelmagno. This high fat content is due to the fact that whole cow’s milk is used to make the cheese. The cows must eat very specific foods such as fresh forage and hay from a meadow or pasture. Castelmagno is normally found in fondues and veloutees and is excellent when paired with fortified wines or honey.

Halloween Drink Recipes

These warm, fall drinks will warm the tummies of little monsters and adults alike! They're toasty and tasty as well as easy to make - which makes them perfect for entertaining or for making together with the family. Below are recipes for Mint Hallo-Cream and Orange Hallo-Cream. Note: you can leave the mint and orange extract out for a simply delicious vanilla cream beverage.

Mint Hallo-Cream

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 gallon milk or soy milk
  • 1 pound vanilla flavored CandiQuik
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • Green food coloring
  • Whipped cream
  • Sprinkles or nonpareils

Instructions:

  1. Heat milk on the stovetop on medium heat for five minutes.
  2. Chop the CandiQuik into small pieces and place into a heat resistant bowl.
  3. Pour the heated milk over the CandiQuik chunks and stir until candy is melted.
  4. Stir in the vanilla and peppermint extracts.
  5. Add 8 drops of green food coloring for color.
  6. Pour drink mixture into glasses, then top with whipped cream and nonpareils or sprinkles and serve!

Orange Hallo-Cream

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 gallon milk or soy milk
  • 1 pound vanilla flavored CandiQuik
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon orange extract
  • Red and yellow food coloring
  • Whipped cream
  • Sprinkles or nonpareils

Instructions:

  1. Heat milk on the stovetop on medium heat for five minutes.
  2. Chop the CandiQuik candy into small pieces and place into a heat resistant bowl.
  3. Pour the heated milk over the CandiQuik chunks and stir until candy is melted.
  4. Stir in vanilla and orange extracts.
  5. Add 3 drops of red food coloring and 12 drops of yellow food coloring to make orange.
  6. Pour drink mixture into glasses, top with whipped cream and nonpareils or sprinkles and serve!
