If any of you are anything like myself you will have lived in various style houses over the past few decades - some maybe being apartments or townhouses, and at other times bigger family houses.

In an apartment it is a good idea to have a wine storage refrigerator in the kitchen or living area, given there is limited space for additional furniture.

Some wine refrigerators sit on bench tops or on a cabinet as they in some cases might only hold 12 -16 wine bottles.

For those of you operating small guest apartments or B&B businesses, a classy looking wine refrigerator is more than a functional item, it adds to the experience of residing in your establishment.

The big plus however is that they are nearly always silent in operation, unlike normal fridges that have a thermostat clicking on and off throughout the day and night - definitely not what you want in a bedroom or small guest apartment.

Many apartments utilize an open plan design with the kitchen, living and dining area as one big room, split up by elements such as island units or kitchen preparation countertops.

In this situation an undercounter wine cabinet is perfect for your needs as these typically hold more wine - like several dozen bottles or so - and even though they go under the countertop, they still look awesome with their stainless steel facia, smoked thermopane glass and extremely classy appearance.

If you happen to have a large family then you are pretty much going to be living in a bigger house.

Bigger families require extra refrigeration space, and there is nothing worse than loading up your main refrigerator with 20 wine bottles.

That definitely is not a recipe for happy families!

In this situation I like to have a family refrigerator for meat and veg, and store my wine elsewhere, in most cases closer to where I am entertaining friends.

If security is an issue there is no issue maintaining your wine under lock and key.

Now when I go to my wine shop, I secure a some additional bottles for the fridge, so I don’t have to go so often.

The Best Way to Store Wine

How you store your wine can make the difference between joyfully opening a perfectly scented, exquisite tasting wine to discovering unexpectedly that you now have a pungent vinegar. Wine lovers are very careful with not only which types of wine they purchase but also how to store wine. Using the best conditions while storing your wine helps ensure a pleasant experience.

Don’t Let The Cork Dry Out

As you want to keep the cork of the wine moist, storing wine on its side prevents the cork from cracking and becoming damaged. Too much or too little humidity can also cause issues. Too much can cause mildew; too little can cause the cork to crack.

Minimize Movement

Vibrations seem to break down wine. Hence, minimizing movement is recommended. By carefully storing your wine in a wine rack it is less likely to be jostled.

The Right Temperature

Wines like to be kept at a consistent temperature that isn’t too hot or too cold. Ideally, wine should be stored between 5 to 18 degrees Celsius. A wine cellar is the most common solution to maintaining this constant environment. This makes certain the wine and the cork are at optimal temperatures.

Light Can Damage Wine

To avoid having light change your wine unfovarably, storing it in darkness or in very low light is highly recommended. Fortunately, most bottles are currently made with ultraviolet filters to reduce the amount of light exposure. Too much light will cause the wine to have a repugnant aroma. Avoid storing your wine in a windowsill for this reason.

Have Your Opened Wine Still Taste Wonderful

If you minimize the amount of air in your wine bottle, the wine that is stored will last longer. This means that you will want to store opened bottles of wine in a smaller container if at all possible. Many wine lovers who don’t want to transfer their wine to another bottle buy wine savers which exchanges the oxygen in the bottle for nitrogen.

We have already reviewed several wines, both white and red, from Alsace, the famous wine-growing region of eastern France. This wine is organic, or perhaps more precisely, this wine comes from vineyards that are on the way to organic certification. Fans of organic products know that certification is a lengthy, arduous process that serves to protect the consumer. If you are a real hardliner you won’t drink wines that are not fully certified as organic. But other fans of organic wine will consider non-certified wines from producers who have made a true commitment to organic wine, as is the case of the wine reviewed below.

One of the most intimidating rituals is the wine tasting. This might look weird to someone who isn’t that interested in wine but it really can help you to not only get the most satisfaction from your wine, but also to learn how to describe wine so that the next time you want to buy a bottle you will have an easier time conveying what you are looking for.

Wine tasting is made up of 3 major steps. No one expects you to be an expert but you can easily learn enough to follow these steps the next time you are trying some wine.

Wine Reviewed
Louis Sipp Sylvaner 2007 12.5% alcohol about $14.50

Let’s start by quoting the marketing materials.
Description: Louis Sipp is a member of Tyflo, an association of Alsatian winegrowers who are keen to lessen the impact of their activities on the environment, and to market healthy products. Currently, the vineyards are in the process of conversion towards full organic certification.
Tasting Note: Louis Sipp shows what can be done with Sylvaner when care is taken with each and every step of production. This one contains bright aromas of lime, spring flowers and mineral. Dry and crisp, this has a very tasty finish. Enjoy with grilled prawns or poached salmon. (VINTAGES panel, July 2008) And now for my review.

The first sips were too acidic. My mouth came close to puckering. The initial food pairing involved a barbecued chicken breast with potatoes roasted in chicken fat and a spicy salsa. The chicken definitely improved the wine. I tasted some lime but the Sylvaner continued to be overly acidic. Perhaps surprisingly, even the potatoes’ grease didn’t cut the wine’s acidity. The salsa succeeded in taming its excessive acidity but the wine only displayed a trace of lime to accompany the salsa’s lime.

The second pairing involved a packaged eggplant parmigiana (as close to organic as any of the foods tasted here) covered with grated parmesan cheese. This time the Sylvaner was pleasantly but not overly acidic. Its lime notes were refreshing. I didn’t feel that the wine was fighting the dish’s tomatoes. I was pleased with its touch of sweetness. I finished the meal with a high-quality ice cream bar coated with chocolate. The wine lost its sweetness but managed to keep some of the lime.

The reason you want to swirl is because your tongue has taste buds all over it in the front and back. Each set of taste buds will respond to different flavors. So to get the maximum flavor you have to use all of your taste buds and that’s why you swirl.

Better Bar Tending

David Artsmith  -  Bartending is a fun and exciting profession, but it takes skill with both drinks and people. The following tips are fairly common sense guidelines that anyone interested in the profession should know and follow.

1. Never discuss religion or politics. All it will do is lead to a fight or make people uncomfortable

2. Keep the bar clean. Wipe it down after you serve every drink, and keep the entire environment neat and tidy. Use drink coasters to ensure that the space maintains its luster.

3. Know the trendy drinks. While you don’t have to have the entire drink recipe guide memorized, it helps to be familiar with the more trendy beverages of the day.

4. Learn about sports. People in bars will often be watching or talking about local sports events. If you understand what they are talking about, you can participate as well.

5. Greet everyone as they come in. Pay attention to people as they come in, especially if they are new to the bar; welcome them with a warm greeting and a smiling face.

6. Be certain to serve the drink by the base of the vessel. Nobody wants to put their lips to a place where your hand just was. As you serve drinks, make sure you hold the glass by the bottom, away from where drinking will actually occur.

7. Maintaining strict personal hygiene is very important in this profession. Make sure that you look neat and sharp, and that you don’t smell bad. You are part of the ambiance of the bar and so your appearance and personal attributes matter.

8. You should also try to be aware of those who regularly come into the bar, as well as good tippers. While you should strive to treat everyone equally, someone who is a constant in the tavern, or who is willing to pay extra for extra service, should receive extra special attention from you.

9. Stay alert. In any establishment where drinking occurs, violence can erupt. You should stay alert, watching for trouble so that you can nip it in the bud. If possible, its always better to stop a fight before it reaches a violent level.

10. Try to have fun. Bartending is a social position. If you look like you are having fun, other people will have more fun as well. Try to relax into the job, and enjoy meeting the people who enter the bar. Be friendly, light, and humorous, and your job will be a lot easier.

How Do You Choose Your Wine?

It’s funny how when it comes to choosing our wine we are all so different.

Some people are such wine snobs and know exactly what they are looking for and certainly won’t settle for anything less.  They don’t flinch at the price of the bottle, even if it tops the hundred pounds mark.

Some might choose their bottle of wine by the packaging and colour of it. I will admit that some wines are nicely packaged, but I wouldn’t choose my wine just because the bottle looks pretty.

Some people won’t drink red wine because it gives them a stinking headache the next day.   Maybe this could be because they might just have drunk too much of it!!

I can’t drink white or rose wine, unless it happens to be fizzy.   A favourite Spanish Wine that fits into this category is the classic Cava. I love Cava so much I actually prefer it to an expensive bottle of Champagne. If you can buy a decent bottle of Vintage Cava then you really can’t go wrong. In our home it’s always a favourite drink when we are having a bit of a family celebration.

I also enjoy the odd glass of red wine. Funnily enough though I absolutely love my red wine served chilled and the colder the better. Wine snobs all over the country will be crying out that you shouldn’t chill red wine, but that’s how I like to drink it, so surely it is my choice.   A good example of a nice bottle of red is a Cabernet Sauvignon.  This is a beautiful Chilean Wine that tastes superb.

I will say that I am not particularly fond of French Wine. That’s probably due to the fact that I’m not keen on the French people, so I boycott their wine completely!!

Today we have a new Tesco Supermarket opening up in our Town.  Now according to news reports this is going to be a new super duper store selling just about everything.  Great, that is going to be brilliant for all the little independent traders!!

Mind you, it has to be good for people who were looking for employment.  The new store has created an additional 250 jobs, so that’s 250 less people signing on at the Job Centre.

However, there is an awful lot of controversy because Tesco’s have been granted a 24 hour alcohol licence.  The new store is in an area of our town where crime is pretty high already.  I’m not sure it was the best idea in the world to grant them a 24 hour licence.  The scum who already roam the streets of the area at night are just going to be even worse if they are able to buy alcohol when they want.

Don’t get me wrong though I am a lover of alcohol, but is it really necessary to be able to purchase it at 3.00 o’clock in the morning?

I have never felt the desire to still be drinking at this time of the morning and I would think if you are then you have a pretty bad alcohol problem.

The store was due to open at 8 this morning and I would think they have invited some local Dignitary to cut the ribbon and there will be a bit of a do afterwards.

I wonder if the drinks have been provided by Tescos??

Personally my favourite wine is a glass of red, but I bet they will have quite a choice.  There will probably be German Wine, Italian Wine and maybe even some Portuguese Wine. I’m sure they wouldn’t have gone all out and provided any Champagne!!

Tesco are reportedly handing over 1,000 Pounds to a local children’s hospice charity.  This sounds like a huge amount, but when you consider that their 2009 pre-tax profits were just over 3 billion, it doesn’t really amount to much!!!

I have only worked at my current employers for about 6 months.

In this short space of time, i have managed to pick up an awful lot of experience within the computer world.

I will admit, that at first I was rather embarrassed as some of the staff are more than half my age, and they knew more than I did. However, you just have to go with the flow and put a smile on your face and listen to what they are saying. They well be upto date with the computer world, but I have plenty of knowledge about life and I could definitely tell them a thing or two. I think they probably look at me like I’m an old relic, and certainly well past my sell by date. However, I think they would be totally shocked by some of my past antics and would certainly view me in a different light if they knew half the things I had got up to!!

Where I work, our bosses really go out of their way to make sure the staff are well looked after.

In our office we are lucky enough to have a few computer consoles and come lunch time the lads take part in their Xbox or Playstation challenge and it can get very competitive at times. We also have a full size pool table that is certainly very well used.

We have a super staff incentive scheme set up. This was initially set up for staff who not only do a brilliant job, but because they also go that little bit further than they have to.

It works quite well and we are nominated by other members of staff and then rewarded. So far I have managed to bag a great bottle of Spanish Wine and a fantastic bottle of French Wine.

Other rewards that staff have had are beauty products, gift vouchers, boxes of chocolates and so on.

A nice bottle of Italian Wine has just been added to the collection of goodies so I might just have to work a little bit harder to see if I can get nominated!!

Right must go now, off to make tea for all the gang, earn myself a few brownie points.

Wine Baskets A Great Choice Any Time

When in doubt on what to buy a person as a gift, there always remains the option of giving wine gift baskets. They can be a welcome change of pace for the recipient. Instead spring a bit of a surprise on them and use your imagination t come up with something that is truly lovely as well as thoughtful. Here we will talk about some things that can be done with wine gift baskets.

There are a variety of containers that a person can choose to use for the wine gift baskets that they make for others. An ice bucket is a common choice, not to mention very practical as well. Many people place a bottle of wine into the ice bucket along with other accessories that would be suitable with the wine that you are giving.

Now you can continue the process of filling the ice bucket with other things that the person may like. Corkscrews are always something that can be used, as they are usually an item that is misplaced often in a person’s kitchen. What good is the wine if the person cannot get the bottle open?

Also a good option as a companion to the wine that you are giving is cheese. There are many different kinds to choose from and you can select one that will amplify the taste of the wine selection that you have made for the recipient.

Throw some crackers into the wine gift baskets that you create as well. This can give them a bit of everything when they open the gift. Some good wine and crackers can be a very nice way for a person or people to relax.

Is the gift to honour of an engagement or an anniversary of some sort? If this is the case then you may want to consider adding a cute set of wine glasses in the basket as well. This is gesture that will definitely go over well and the couple will have memories of your gift that will last them a lifetime as well.

Wine gift baskets are a way that a person can use their imagination. Take a bit of time and think of the many different things that you can do and how they apply to the person that you are thinking of doing this for. Once you have some ideas, put them to work for you. When you are done you will have a gift that will be loved by the recipient.
